The Church of San Román de Tobillas is considered the oldest in Álava.

Thanks to the restoration carried out by the Historical Heritage Service of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Álava Provincial Council, its architecture can now be admired in all its splendor.

Chronologically, the evolution of the architecture from the pre-Romanesque period consists of four phases: an initial building dating from the first half of the 9th century, including the apse and the initial courses of the foundation; a second building, from the 10th century, of which traces remain of the apse covered by a tufa dome on pendentives; the Romanesque building, of which the entrance arch and friezes remain; and a final phase encompassing all the renovations it has undergone to reach its present state.

The church of San Román de Tobillas has important evidence when dating it: the first from Abbot Abito, who tells us about the reform as a monastic church in the year 822. The next document is provided by the priest Vigila, who tells us about the restoration he carried out in the 10th century and the last testimony, also comes to us through a Mozarabic inscription.
